Even good quality honey and poor quality and adulterated honey weigh the same.
When shopping for honey jars, beekeepers usually search a lot of websites. If you haven’t looked at our honey jars for sale, please take a look at our glass and plastic jars. When you buy a jar, it is typically advertised in fluid ounces because that makes sense for most customers. But most customers are not buying jars specifically for honey.
Selling Jars to Non-Beekeepers
Buying the jar based on fluid ounces is the most common way to shop for jars. This is ideal because you buy a container containing a specific amount of fluid. If you look at the jars in a grocery store, the product is advertised in cups, fluid ounces, milliliters, etc…They are all in volume measurement.
Your recipe for chicken noodle soup doesn’t call for 2 pounds of chicken stock; it calls for 4 cups. This is why the jars are advertised in fluid ounce measurements.

Selling Jars To Beekeepers
But here is the rub. By law, honey is sold by weight and not by volume. It doesn’t matter how many cups of honey are in the jar; all that matters is how many ounces by weight or grams. Because of this, some companies selling specifically to beekeepers advertise the jars in ounces by weight and not by fluid ounces.
This is easy to identify with honey bears. A honey bear that says “8 oz Honey Bear“, you can know that that bear holds 8 oz by weight of honey. But if that same jar is sold like any other jar for non-honey use, it will say 6 fl oz or 6 oz.
Not all jars are made specifically for honey, though. Some jars made for honey are Classic Jars, Muth Jars, Queen Line Jars, and Honey Bear Bottles. Some other jars not made for beekeepers but commonly used are Mayo Jars, Paragon Jars, Hex Jars, and Mason Jars. These jars and bottles not made specifically for honey can be advertised in oz by weight or in fluid ounces.
It is also very common for beekeepers to sell honey in mason or canning jars. This is because a lot of beekeepers are also gardeners who preserve foods. So instead of buying different types of jars, they sell the honey by the pint, quart, or gallon. There isn’t any consistency, so we made this honey calculator to help out.
Why Is Measuring Honey So Difficult?
For some reason, if you are asking how much honey does a gallon of honey weigh, it’s not always an easy answer. Beekeepers tend to complicate things for some reason. Plus, when buying honey jars, most of them give the size in oz, and you are left to figure out if it is in fluid ounces or ounces. Not all companies sell their jars using the same description if they have a description at all.
Confusion over honey weight
To add to the confusion, some general rules are thrown out. For example, “A pint is a pound the world around.” This gets tossed out as it applies to everything, but it only applies to things like milk, water, or chicken stock. It doesn’t apply to feathers, ice cream, or honey.
Is A Cup Of Honey 8 Ounces?
Many people who keep bees are backyard beekeepers and harvest honey in their kitchens. And when they want to see how much honey is in a cup, they look at their measuring cup, which says 8oz.
So that means a cup of honey is 8 oz, right? Yes, it is 8 fluid ounces (which is what the measuring cups are measuring), but it’s roughly 12 oz by weight. To say it again a little differently, If you fill up a 2-cup (16 fluid oz) measuring cup with honey, it is 16 fluid ounces. But if you put the same cup on a scale, it will be about 22 oz by weight. The oz weight of honey does not equal the fluid oz of honey.
But if you did the same thing with water 2 cups of water (16 fluid oz) and put it on a scale, the water weighs 16 oz by weight.
Different Honey Weights
A normal person can look at honey and tell it is syrupy, which is why we love it. The bees have worked hard to remove about 82% of the water content to make the honey thick and syrupy. The thickness of the honey affects the weight of the honey so honey density will vary. The thicker honey is, the heavier and denser it is. One cup of honey weighs more than one cup of water.
Some beekeepers will unnecessarily complicate the matter because some honey is denser than others. The bees remove the water from nectar by flapping their wings so many variables will dictate the moisture content of the honey, like the bees, nectar source, and weather. A beekeeper will actually use a refractometer to measure the water content in honey or you can take the cues from the bees.
Some bees will make honey thicker than others colonies, and the thicker honey will weigh more per cup. But that is splitting hairs and not worth worrying about. If you are buying large quantities (barrels) of honey, you should concern yourself with this, but it doesn’t matter to the average beekeeper.
Rules For Selling Honey
The law in most places is honey is supposed to be sold by weight instead of by volume. This creates a good standard for everybody so it’s typical to see the weight of honey in ounces (by weight) and the honey weight in grams. If all else fails, you can use the metric system in grams to figure out how much honey you have and how much can fit in a container.
The Food and Drug Administration is the agency that controls and monitors the laws for honey labeling, which is very helpful if you produce honey. They have a detailed PDF from 2018 on rules for selling honey that is worth consulting. The PDF has several commonly asked questions and answers, but it includes these 5 important points.
The label should include the weight of honey in ounces or pounds and also in grams, not including the packaging.
If imported, the honey should include the source country.
The word “Honey” should be included plus the varietal, if applicable, such as Clover, Orange Blossom, or Wildflower Honey
The contact information of the beekeeper, producer, honey packer, or distributor
Must include any additional ingredients besides honey, such as flavorings.

There is a general rule that 1 gallon of honey weighs 12 lbs. This is a good rule of thumb and is worth trusting. With that information, you can figure out a lot, but it can still be confusing.
